Everyone believed Rogelio died in the uprising of 1936-that is, until he returns in 1977 to the village where he was born and was shot along with his father and brother. Rogelio doesn't know why he is alive-why the bullets shot at him missed their target. After he fell into the pit miraculously unharmed, he managed to escape before it was covered with soil. After that, he fled to France, where he fought in the second world war, was a prisoner in the extermination camp of Mauthausen, and emigrated to South America. Now that he's back in town, he finds his sister Virtudes, who has known that he was alive for twenty years but has kept it a secret out of fear. But when his ex-girlfriend, friends, the chief, and others hear the news, old feelings and questions surface. What is Rogelio looking for? Everyone believes it's revenge, but Rogelio has other intentions-healing wounds and making peace-and he has two questions: Why is he alive? And who betrayed his family?
