Scottish writter, Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (1859-1930), is known for his notable character Sherlock Holmes and sidekick John Watson. Doyle's family was surprised that he went to medical school and didn't pursue a career in the arts. Doyle's mentor, Professor Dr. Joseph Bell was the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes because of his great power of observation.
